That's wrong. You still need to carry insurance.

But you can tell your insurer that you will be out of the country for certain period of time, so that they will credit you for the difference.
Unless you surrender your license plate or transfer the ownership of the vehicle, you can't cancel your insurance, or your license will be suspended.
