Q: Why is the United States afraid of China and promotes the China threat theory?
A:
Because China does not fear the US, that constitutes a threat to the US hegemony based on the Western political culture.
The US views itself as the City on the Hill, the chosen, and the ruler of the world. This is the hegemonic psyche of the Christian civilization. According to the Bibble, God rules the universe. But God is intangible. So the real ruler is the chosen. The ruler, in this case, the USA, is like God, must be feared. Bibble provides the model of how the world should be ruled: that is, people should fear God. God can be angry, and the anger has a catastrophic consequence, such as a flood, a plague, killing all the firstborn, annihilating the whole city or nation, etc.
The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli is a must-read for students in political science. It is one of the foundational works of the Western political culture. Machiavelli said in The Prince that the ruler must be feared.
So if China does not fear the US, the US feels threatened. The US considers China’s not fearing a threat to its hegemonic power. So it is doing all the nasty things to China.
China promotes a relationship based on mutual respect, and the US never accepts this idea. What the US wants is not mutual respect. The US is reluctant to respect China. What the US wants is for China to fear the US. If the US respects China, how can China fear the US?
That’s why the US feels threatened by every country, because no country would like to live in fear. Living in fear is not a happy life. But if you are not living in fear of the US, then you are a threat to the US hegemony.
Iraq used to be an ally of the US. Iraq gradually liked the alliance and felt no fear of the US. Then the US invaded Iraq. Gaddafi made friends with the West and did almost everything the US wanted him to do. Gradually, Gaddafi felt the friendship and had no fear, then NATO bombed Libya. Russia followed every step the West taught it to do, privatized all the assets, and adopted the Western market economy and election democracy. Russia felt so warm that it suggested multiple times to join Europe economically and politically, but there was one problem: Russia does not fear the US.
The Western political culture based on fear is problematic. People should not live in fear. When fear becomes the political doctrine, Western civilization will decay because no one would like to live in fear.
China’s GDP per capita is still very low, yet its life expectancy is relatively high, higher than the US. Chinese in China live without fear. A life without fear is happier than living in fear.
We are all human beings. We should not fear each other. Making the world fear one country is morally wrong, but it is the doctrine of the Western political culture.
China does not threaten other nations or people. Chinese political culture is based on Confucianism. Confusus did not think the ruled should fear the ruler. Confusus believes that rulers should do what the people like, not to make people fear. Chinese gods never resort to violence, never get angry, and never create disasters to punish people. Chinese political culture is different from the West. Fear has no position in China’s political culture. That’s why China is building a harmonious society where no one fears others. China promotes the vision of a shared future for mankind, envisioning a future where no one fears others.
China does not threaten other nations. The China threat is the perception of the West that wants others to fear it.
