無論是“double down”還是“double up” 都是由“double”這個詞演化而來的詞組，所以肯定帶有“double”（“雙”）的含義。但這兩個詞組的含義和用法卻相差甚遠，並且我們很難從字麵上看出端倪。
《麥考瑞大辭典》對“double down”這個詞組有兩條解釋：
