Table 3.G Pharaoh's Hard Heart

The plagues narrative is driven forward by Pharaoh's stubbornness, referred to consistently as his hard heart. The narrative varies among three notions of agency: God hardens Pharaoh's heart, Pharaoh hardens his own heart, and the passive that simply states his heart was hardened without specifying agency. Examine the evidence and try to determine whether or not there is any pattern to Pharaoh's hard heartedness. For further study of Pharaoh's hardening of heart see Kuyper (1974), Wilson (1979), and Currid (1993).
