3.3 廣島地區土壤樣品中塵埃的銫和鈈
廣島轟炸後,1950年之前,山本等人【63】在黑雨降落區各處建立起的房屋下麵采集了一些土壤樣品,因此是在地球的大部分放射性塵埃侵襲之前。所有的樣品都含有一些銫137,水平幾乎都分布在兩個數量級。然而最早在1946年從兩座樓房所采集的樣品中,所檢測到的最高量值仍然遠低於廣島那些未受到保護、後來受到地球放射性塵埃汙染的土壤的量值。因此,即使在黑雨地區,廣島轟炸產生的銫137塵埃的量也是很小的。
為了解釋他們觀察到的銫的水平的不定性,這些作者們振振有詞地提出可能是因為一些樓房在準備施工的時候進行了挖掘。然而他們還說明:
根據我們對木工們的采訪,這段時間修建的木結構建築沒有擾動地表麵的土壤。
這就說明,在被認為有放射性塵埃的區域內,放射性塵埃的分布確實是相當不均勻的。
我們將在13.1.5節再進一步討論放射性塵埃的分布是如何的不均勻。在這裏,我們隻需要注意下麵的關鍵問題:不管這裏的土壤在施工之前是否受到擾動,一旦房屋建完,土壤都應該得到了保護,不受任何放射性塵埃的汙染。因此更引人注目的是,在山本的所有基本上受到保護的地下土層樣品中,也發現了鈈。
由於廣島的炸彈應該是含有濃縮鈾,而不是鈈,所以它的放射性塵埃中鈈的含量應該極少。(腳注7)觀察到的鈈(鈈239+鈈240)的活性確實大約隻有銫137的4%(見圖3.4B)。在考慮到這兩種鈈的同位素相當長的半衰期之後,它的摩爾量——即它的原子的總量——平均超過了銫137的摩爾量大約20——25倍。

需要進一步考慮的是檢測的時間。自從那次轟炸,鈈沒有發生顯著的衰變;但銫137的衰變快很多,從那次轟炸到山本的研究結果公布期間,已經比原來的數量減少了1/5 。因此在轟炸的時候豐度比(鈈/銫)應該會接近4 。
這些作者們一開始虔誠地相信官方關於炸彈的說法都是真實的,認為初始樣品中應該不存在鈈,把他們發現的鈈歸因於地球放射性塵埃的汙染。因為這使他們的研究失去了基本的前提——換句話說,他們的樣品應該是沒有受到這種汙染的——人們期待他們能夠做出一些努力,解釋這一希望中不該出現的結果。然而,這樣的解釋沒有出現。更重要的是作者們沒有考察他們假設的這種汙染的可能性,他們輕易地從同一地區在1945年8月之前建的樓房下麵采集土壤樣品。如果研究的初始前提成立,這樣的樣品應該免受任何放射性塵埃的影響;另一方麵,根據作者們修正的假設,塵埃的放射性應該在所有這些樣品中都存在。
我想到的唯一能把地球放射性塵埃從室外帶到房屋地底下的攜帶者隻會是滲漏的雨水。然而,請注意,根據同是這些作者【64】的一份初期的報告,放射性大部分存在於土壤最表層的很淺的土層裏(見圖3.4A)。很難看出房屋外麵的水是怎樣滲透才會產生這樣的分布的。此外,銫和鈈同樣都沒有進入土壤裏;前麵提到的由阪口等人【57】進行的研究表明鈈移動的速度比銫快,因此更具流動性。所以,如果地球放射性塵埃真的由滲透的雨水從外麵帶進了房屋底下的土壤中,在房屋底下的鈈/ 銫比率應該增大很多。在這種情況下,山本那些含有最高鈈活性的樣品中,也就是認為汙染最嚴重的樣品中,也應該是對銫的活度比最高。然而,我們繪製出的鈈的活性與銫的活性之比與鈈的活性並不相符,這種趨勢並不明顯。(但是分散性非常大;見圖3.4B)因此,滲漏的雨水可能是汙染的一種假設途徑被排除了。
當然,對於樣品中的鈈還有另一種解釋:樣品不應該接觸到地球放射性塵埃——或者說,它們確實沒有接觸到地球放射性塵埃,鈈確實存在於廣島炸彈的塵埃中。這種假設具有既簡單又有現實合理性的雙重優點;它的唯一難處是與官方的說法背道而馳。
