Today the woods is unusually quiet, no rustling sounds from falling leaves, no chirps from birds’ chatting, only the gently choruses from the fall insects and the sound from the occasional raindrops, a trivial brisk sound with a beauty beyond words.

Immersed in the tranquility, I am ready to perceive the surroundings with conceptions. But all of a sudden, a reverberatory sound likes drumming comes from the sky over my head.  The 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd…the drumbeats are rhythmic and powerful. Looking to where the sound coming from, I expect to see the master--a woodpecker. But he/her is too high to be seen.

Beauty is commonly described as a feature of objects that makes these objects pleasurable to perceive. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, humans and works of art. Beauty, together with art and taste, is the main subject of aesthetics, one of the major branches of philosophy. As a positive aesthetic value, it is contrasted with ugliness as its negative counterpart(美是正能量,醜是負能量). Along with truth and goodness it is one of the transcendentals, which are often considered the three fundamental concepts of human understanding.

One difficulty for understanding beauty is due to the fact that it has both objective and subjective aspects(問題是,人們對美的理解有客觀性,也有主觀性): it is seen as a property of things but also as depending on the emotional response of observers. Because of its subjective side, beauty is said to be "in the eye of the beholder".[2] It has been argued that the ability on the side of the subject needed to perceive and judge beauty, sometimes referred to as the "sense of taste", can be trained and that the verdicts of experts coincide in the long run. This would suggest that the standards of validity of judgments of beauty are intersubjective, i.e. dependent on a group of judges, rather than fully subjective or fully objective.

Conceptions of beauty aim to capture what is essential to all beautiful things. Classical conceptions define beauty in terms of the relation between the beautiful object as a whole and its parts: the parts should stand in the right proportion to each other and thus compose an integrated harmonious whole. Hedonist conceptions see a necessary connection between pleasure and beauty, e.g. that for an object to be beautiful is for it to cause disinterested pleasure. Other conceptions include defining beautiful objects in terms of their value, of a loving attitude towards them or of their function.

今天聽電影THE WAY WE WERE《往日情懷》 裏主題歌THE WAY WE WERE 的歌詞作者之一 MARLYN BERGMAN 去世,享年93歲。

The Way We Were

Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?
Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget
So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
The way we were

記憶照亮了思緒的角落,那些記憶中的你我,朦朧得有如水彩;
