Small Town Roses

That narrow street
Of memory!
Limestone worn out
By generations
Of earthy mountaineers
Still echoes my childhood
My dream: roses
Over rain-washed
Sculptures of footsteps
In limestone &
Grandma with bound feet
Tracing the ancient
Sound of love

One summer evening
I ran to the hilltop
To be kissed
By the purple lips Of sunset
Small town disappeared
In smoky mist
A dog was barking
In clouds

I was a young girl then
With a young girl’s mind
I did not know much
About the world
Beyond the mountain range
I laid my back flat
On a huge limestone
Which took all
The summer heat from me

For a long while
I drank alone
All the silence I could
There was a voice
Echoing in the stone
A voice I heard before
Only in dreams ...
I was a young girl then
With a young girl’s mind
