譯記：

惠特曼的詩歌，若大聲讀出來，更能體味其恢宏的氣象與昂揚的激情。在大一時，我曾連續多日誦讀楚圖南翻譯的《草葉集選》，尤其是《大陸之歌》和《自我之歌》，搞得室友們叫苦不迭。:-)

那本書頁發黃的《草葉集選》卷首就是上麵這張惠特曼的版畫像。後來，我又購得在楚圖南選譯本基礎上、李野光補譯的全譯本（人文版），也讀過趙蘿蕤的全譯本（“網格本”，上海譯文版）。

我手頭上的英文版是“Library of America”叢書中的《Walt Whitman: Poetry & Prose》。這個版本很獨特，有《草葉集》的1855年第一版和30年後的最後一版。

楚圖南與趙蘿蕤兩位前輩大名鼎鼎的中譯，都頗得惠特曼原文的神韻。這首《致冬天的火車頭》楚圖南沒有選譯，在人文版《草葉集》全譯本中是由李野光補譯的。

這裏又不揣固陋，試譯一遍，原因之一是我對兩個譯本的第一行都不滿意。（李譯：“你適於我吟誦”。趙譯要好些：“你給我提供了一首朗誦詩”。）當然，我選擇的譯法也未必怎麽樣，隻是自己感覺尚可罷了。

貼這首詩是為了和狄金森的以火車為題的詩作進行一下比較。

致冬天的火車頭

你，讓我來為你吟誦，

你，在急驟的風暴中，就像現在這樣，在雪中，在冬日的黃昏中，

你，披掛鎧甲，規則的雙拍搏動，還有痙攣般的節奏，

你那黑色的圓柱軀體，白銀一樣的鋼與黃金一樣的銅，

你那沉重的側欄，平行杆和連杆，在你兩邊旋轉、擺動，

你的韻律，一時強盛，又喘息又咆哮，一時漸細，在遠處消融，

你碩大隆起的車燈在前麵固定，

你信號旗般拖著長長、蒼白、漂浮的蒸氣，染著淡淡的紫色，

你濃密厚重的煙雲從你的煙囪中噴湧，

你緊繃的體魄，你的彈簧和閥門，你的車輪閃爍顫抖的光明，

你的一串車廂，在後麵溫順、快樂地跟從，

Thee for my recitative,

Thee in the driving storm even as now, the snow, the winter-day declining,
