Color Flow Imaging Basics: Blood Flow Direction Display

In a typical color flow image the anatomy is in black and white while the blood flow is a color overlay. The color bar, shown on the screen whenever color flow imaging is active, helps you interpret the color flow image.

The color bar, shown here in the upper right corner, aids in determination of the flow direction. In Doppler, blood flow moving towards the transducer is above the spectral baseline, and blood flow moving away from the transducer is below the baseline. The same holds true for CFI, blood flow moving toward the transducer is displayed in colors above the color baseline, and blood flow moving away from the transducer is displayed in colors below the baseline.
