John New­ton, Ol­ney Hymns (Lon­don: W. Ol­i­ver, 1779)

John Newton wrote this hymn after converting to Christianity In the village of Kineton, in Warwickshire, England. The hymn describes his feelings about the slave trade while on his ship, the Greyhound, in 1748. Several years later he abandoned the slave trade. Newton maintained that his true conversion did not take place until several years after the storm incident.

這裏所說的 storm incident 指的就是有一次 約翰.牛頓船行海上遇到突然的大風暴, 他向神呼求, 向神求救. 後來他們奇跡般從那次海上風暴中生存了下來. 他堅信是神垂聽並回答了他的呼求, 是神救了他. 所以他寫道:
