You surface briefly

in that inward fold,

then fall away—

a smile erased

from the margin of a diary.

 

Later, moonlight

lifts off the lake,

a pale accumulation

settling at the corner of my eye:

a single drop—amber—

keeping its small coldness,

its hour,

its unfinished trace of you.
