下麵是探險隊八月二日啟航後發回的第一片實錄。探險隊於一天之中見到了四次北極熊。
All is going well here. We are leaving Canada behind this evening and heading across a glassy calm Baffin Bay. We spent most of the day in Scott Inlet / Gibb and Clark Fjords and had an incredible ship cruise starting at around 5:45 am and ending at about 9:30. A landing followed and then a superb barbecue on the stern deck finished it off as we slowly sailed out. Macrofauna included at least 10 separate sightings of narwhal and 5 polar bears today – four of them excellent views for the passengers and one of them a great view for me (depending on the perspective – ask about the bear banger later).
We had an excellent visit to Pond Inlet yesterday and visited a community transformed by the joy of having killed their first bowhead whale since 1910. Very exciting for the town and even the kids seemed to be content. Again, another excellent polar bear sighting last night just before dinner, one of the better ones I have had from a ship.
To date, we have checked off about 15 excellent polar bear sightings (plus 5 or so polar dots), a superb musk ox experience with about 5 musk ox, excellent views of walrus on three separate occasions (small groups of 2 or 3 at a time), Arctic hare, hooded seal, harp seals galore, ringed seals and bearded seals. All in all, the voyage is going very well from a wildlife point of view.
Passengers appear to be very happy with the wildlife sightings!
