Experienced travelers: hotel/hostle recommendations

Hi,

Can anyone recommend some hotel/hostle in Amsterdam, Paris, Venice, Rome, Monaco, Montpelli and Barcelona please?  Planning a trip to Europe by ourself.  Thinking to stay somewhere safe, less expensive and near the train station.  Does it make sense?  Thanks for any insight that you can share.
